To get the semester off to a flying start, we broke into groups and took part in a small esquisse exercise which aimed at harnessing creative thinking in the design and building of a prototype for the most adaptable space. The group which I am a team member of is group 20 and the other members are Dang Dang Zhou http://srd364ddz.blogspot.com and Chung Tai Hiung http://srd364thc.blogspot.com.
After we had formed our group, we had a discussion on our initial thoughts. Most of my initial thoughts were developing around traditional geometric shapes such as spheres and cubes. From here, we went away and did some sketches to further develop the ideas. We shared our developments and as a group we came up with our chosen concept.
The focus of our concept was based on folding. The reasoning for developing the concertina fold was so that the design could easily be compacted for transportation. We also liked our chosen design as it was also adaptive as it could be extended as well as being bendable.
As a building, we envisaged that the design would be built using a light weight skeletal frame with a fabric covering or a hinged panel system. Below are some photos of our model.
This esquisse was a good exercise to begin the semester as it got us to begin thinking creatively again after the mid-semester break. Furthermore what I learned from the exercise was that firstly as a class group, we are capable of doing great work in a short amount of time. Secondly, from the exercise and other groups examples, it showed that there are many architectural ideas such as folding and inflating which are not commonly used but have the potential to solve some issues.
